Placenta Encapsulation

Placentophagy is the practice of ingesting the placenta after delivery. Placenta encapsulation is the process of thoroughly cleaning the placenta, steaming it (optional), cutting it into slices, dehydrating it, grinding it up, and placing into capsules.

What are the benefits of Placenta Encapsulation?
  • Increase general energy
  • Allow a quicker return to health after birth
  • Increase production of breast milk
  • Decrease likelihood of baby blues and postpartum depression
  • Decrease likelihood of iron deficiency
  • Decrease likelihood of insomnia or sleep disorders

Everybody is unique and has a different response to placentophagy and because of the powerful effects of the placenta other benefits are also likely but too numerous to mention. We believe that placentophagy is particularly beneficial to vegetarian mothers and those prone to postpartum depression.

During and after a normal vaginal delivery (including postpartum bleeding) a new mother can lose up to 1/10 of her body’s blood supply. With surgical births or hemorrhage, blood loss can be significantly more.  Losing a large amount of iron so quickly can cause anemia, leaving a new mother feeling tired, faint and exhausted when she already is going to be up at all hours with a newborn.  The blood needs high supplies of iron to carry oxygen to the cells for healing and energy. Low supplies of oxygen leave your cells starving and less able to heal after trauma. The placenta can benefit the new mother by supplying incredibly rich meaty iron, amino acids and essential fats which is believed to be the perfect replenishment following the miracle of birth. The most modern and noninvasive way to consume the placenta is placenta encapsulation.

The most important nutrients found in rich supply in the placenta include Stem Cells and Growth Factors such as:
  • Iron – essential for oxygen absorption in the cells.
  • Vitamins B6 and B12 – aids in the making of antibodies and provides extra energy.
  • Vitamin E – for healing damaged skin cells.
  • Oxytocin hormone – essential for facilitating birth and breastfeeding.
  • Cytokines – Fibroblasts that trigger cell metabolism healing and replacing damaged cells and tissue.
  • Corticotropin-releasing hormone (CRH) – responsible for reducing stress levels.

During pregnancy a woman's body carries an increased amount of hormones, when the baby is born those hormone levels that sustained a pregnancy dramatically decrease around the third or fourth day postpartum. This is referred to as the hormonal drop off. Research suggests that this event is responsible for baby blues and postpartum disorders. The placenta contains all of those hormones that were flowing through the body during pregnancy and can benefit a mother by providing a gentle gradual decrease in hormone levels instead of that dramatic drop off.

Taking placenta pills has also shown to support breast milk production and aid in a positive breastfeeding experience for mother and baby and also may help reduce the length of time of postpartum bleeding.

Depending on the size of the placenta, you can expect to get 80-200 pills that you can take as long as you need during your postpartum time!

Bengkung Belly Binding

Bengkung or Malaysian belly binding, considered to be an ancient art, is a tradition used in many cultures all over the world and is quickly becoming more popular in the US.  It is the process of tightly wrapping fabric to support the pelvis, abdominal area and hips of a woman in the postpartum period. Women for generations have used belly binding to accomplish this.

Some women buy a girdle-type garment of stretchy but supportive material, however many woman report that those can dig in to hip and rib bones and eventually loose elasticity. Indonesian women use long pieces of beautiful cloth, the advantage to using the cloth for wrapping is that it's infinitely adjustable, soft and comfortable, customizable to your changing shape, beautiful, and fits most women. The most powerful benefits that Bengkung belly binding provide are:
  • Excellent for helping repair abdominal separation
  • Gives support to the womb after birth
  • Speeds up the healing process of the uterus and provides a cleansing of blood clots
  • Helps to reduce common back and shoulder pain associated with nursing by improving posture
  • Helps to tone up your abdominal muscles and shape your hips after childbirth
  • Relieves muscular and tendon tension throughout the torso
  • Relieves water retention
  • Improves circulation
  • Excellent support after surgical births (allow time for incision to heal prior to beginning bind)

Our pure muslin binds are about 18 yards long and 7-8 inches wide to accommodate low hip binds to support the pelvic floor and to accommodate every shape of woman. These hand sewn and beautifully dyed binds are comfortable and supportive; and can be worn under or over clothing. We offer differing knot styles to fit the specific needs of each mother we are serving and add new color to our selection often. Knot styles differ based on moms shape and comfort. We prefer wrapping new moms in the evening before bed so that she can sleep while it does most of the work, but you can be wrapped at any time of day and it will be beneficial. Binds are most beneficial when worn 12-24 hrs at a time and should be started 3-4 days after birth, a c -section mother should wait 2-4 weeks before beginning a bind to allow her incision to begin to heal properly.

At your binding session we will provide a salve infused with herbs to promote healing for your skin and muscles (can also be used on sore nipples and perineum!), or a warming essential oil blend to put on your abdomen to promote blood flow to the area for healing. We provide mothers with instruction on how to self-wrap, or teach their partner how. We will also custom dye your belly bind if you have a specific color request. Binds are offered in 1, 3, and 5 day packages but can be customized as needed.
